Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 15th Khanda of Chapter Three of Chandogya Upanishad deals with meditation on the universe as a chest. The chest of the universe, with the mid region its inside and the earth for its bottom, does not decay. The different corners comprise of the quarters and the heaven is the lid that forms the above portion. Everything lies within the chest, thus it can be regarded as the storehouse. Of the four corners, the eastern quarter is called Juhu, the southern quarter Sahamana, the western quarter Rajni and the northern quarter Subhuta. Their child is Vayu, the air. One who is aware of this Vayu as the child of the quarters never cries for his sons. One must take refuge in the imperishable chest, in the Prana, in the Bhuh, in the Bhuvah and in the Svah. Prana means everything that exists in the universe. The Bhuh in which one takes refuge is the earth, the mid region and heaven. The Bhuvah in which one takes refuge is the fire, the air and the sun. The Svah in which one takes refuge is the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda and Sama Veda.
