Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains eight chapters. The 15th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the Prana as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than hope. Sanatkumara replied that Prana is greater than hope. He explained that as the spokes of a wheel are all attached to the nave so are all things with the name and ending with hope attached to Prana. The vital air moves through Prana; Prana gives vitality, it gives Prana to animals; Prana is father, Prana, is mother, Prana is brother, Prana is sister, Prana is teacher, Prana is Brahmin. Thus, if anyone speaks anything offensive to his father and mother, brother, sister, teacher or a Brahmin, it is regarded as sin and he is regarded as a slayer of them. However, when the Prana has departed from them, one shoves them together with a poker and burns them. Then no one would then blame him as the slayer of his father, mother, brother, sister, teacher, a Brahmin. Prana is all these. He who knows the Prana observing, thinking and knowing them thus, becomes an Ativadi i.e. superior speaker.
