Chandogya Upanishad, one of the oldest Upanishad has been written during the Vedic Brahmana period. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. Chandogya Upanishad is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 15th Khanda of Chapter Four of Chandogya Upanishad states about the instruction by the teacher. The teacher told Upakosala that the person that is seen in the eye is the Self. This is the immortal and the fearless. It is the real Brahman. It is for this reason, if a drop of melted butter or water in poured in the eye; it passes on both the sides. He is known as Samyadvama as all adorable objects (vama) merge into him who is aware of this. He is also the great receptacle i.e. Vamani, as he carries to all living beings (nayati) all the blessings (vama). One who is aware of this carries all blessings. He is the refulgent i.e. Bhamani, for he shines (bhati) in all the worlds. One who knows this shines in all the worlds. Whether or not one performs the funeral rites for such a person, still after death he goes to light (Archi), from light to day (Aha), from day to the bright half of the moon, from the bright half of the moon to the six months during which the sun goes to the north, from those months to the year, from the year to the sun, from the sun to the moon, from the moon to lightning. A person there then leads him to Brahman. It is the Path of the Gods (Devayana), the path leading to Brahman. One who walks on this path does noty return from there.
