Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 14th Khanda of Chapter Six of Chandogya Upanishad states about the means of self knowledge. Uddalaka, the son of Aruna explained to his son Svetaketu, the grandson of Aruna that when a person is blindfolds someone and takes him away from the country of the Gandharas and leaves him in an unknown place where there were no human beings; the person would move to the east, or the north, or the south, or the west, frantically shouting for a way out. Later when someone opens the covering of the eye and directs the way to the Gandhara, he is then capable of judging his words and the way back to the Gandhara. Similarly, when a person finds the perfect teacher to instruct him he then obtains the true knowledge. He remains liberated from all worldly ties till he attains the ultimate Truth i.e. Moksha. It is this subtle essence that exists within all beings. It is the Supreme Brahman.
