Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahamana that contains ten chapters. The 14th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states hope as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than memory to which Sanatkumara replied that hope is greater than memory. He explained that when a person is kindled by hope he is endowed with memory and he is able to read the sacred mantras, perform ceremonial works, desire children and cattle, and longs for the world. One must, thus, meditate on hope as Brahman. He is then able to obtain the world rich in hope. He who knows this and realises it becomes free and reaches as far as hope reaches. He is able to achieve whatever he desires through hope and his prayers do not go in vain.
