Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 12th Khanda of Chapter Six of Chandogya Upanishad states about the birth of the gross from the subtle. Uddalaka, the son of Aruna instructed his son Svetaketu, the grandson of Aruna to bring him a fruit of the Nyagrodha tree. Upon fetching the fruit he asked him to break it into two halves. Once it was broken Uddalaka asked Svetaketu what he could see inside it. The later replied that it saw few very small seeds. He was then further instructed to break those and state what he saw within them. Svetaketu replied that he saw nothing inside it. Uddalaka explained to him that the subtle essence that he was not able to perceive gave birth to the huge nyagrodha tree. It is this subtle essence that exists within all and is the ultimate truth. It is the Self.
