12th Khanda of Chapter Seven, Chandogya UpanishadChandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad and has been written during the Vedic Brahmana period. It is associated with Sama Veda and has been ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. Chandogya Upanishad is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 12th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the Akasa as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than fire to which Sanatkumara replied that akasa is greater than fire. He explained that in the akasa exist the sun and the moon, lightning, stars and fire. People communicate with each other through the akasa. It is through the akasa that people hear and reply back. One rejoices and celebrates when he is together and does not rejoice when he is separated. Everything is born in the akasa and all things grow in the akasa. Everything is born in akasa and merges into akasa. One must thus, meditate upon the akasa as Brahman. He is then able to obtain the world rich in akasa and becomes luminous and free from pain. He who knows this and realises it becomes free and reaches as far as akasa reaches.
