12th Khanda of Chapter One

Chandogya Upanishad, one of the oldest Upanishad has been written during the Vedic Brahmana period. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. Chandogya Upanishad is the part of Chandogya Brahman that contains ten chapters. The 12th Khanda of Chapter One of Chandogya Upanishad states about the Udgitha of the Dogs. According to it one day, Vaka, the son of Dalbhya, or Glava son of Mitra, as he was known went to study the Vedas. On his way a white dog appeared before him. Immediately many other dogs gathered around the white dog and asked him to sing for them so they may obtain food as they were hungry. The white dog asked them to come to him the following day. Vaka watched the complete incident. The dogs kept moving with him just as the priests move along, holding to one another, when they are about to sing praises with the Vahishpavamana hymn. Then all sat down and uttered the syllable Him. They together prayed recited the Om Mantra and sang praises of the Sun who is the luminous deity (deva), the giver of rain (Lord Varuna), the lord of creatures (Prajapati). They prayed to the Sun for food.
