Chandogya Upanishad, one of the oldest Upanishad has been written during the Vedic Brahmana period. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. Chandogya Upanishad is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 11th Khanda of Part Five of Chandogya Upanishad deals with the Universal Self. Prachinasala the son of Upamanyu, Indradyumna the grandson of Bhallavi, Satyayajna the son of Pulusha, Jana the son of Sarkaraksha and Budila the son of Asvatarasva were great householders and well versed in the Vedas. They all met at a place to discuss about the real Self and the Supreme Brahman. Unable to come to a discussion they thought of going to Uddalaka, son of Aruni, who had lately learned of the soul Vaisvanara. Uddlaka understood that the great householders and great scriptural scholars would question him and he won`t be able to answer them. He thus, thought of directing them to some other teacher. He lead them to Aswapati who received all of them with due respect. The following morning when the guests had left their bed Aswapati approached them and told them that there was no thief, no miser, no wine bibber, no man without a sacrificial fire, no ignorant person, no adulterer, much less adulteress. He informed them that he would perform a sacrifice and provide each one of them with wealth. However, all of them denied accepting the wealth and asked him to explain to them about the Supreme Brahman as he was the only person who knew about the Vaisvanara Self. Aswapati accepted their request and asked them to come the next morning for the discussion. The following morning they all came with fuel in their hands. Aswapati then began explaining to them about the real Self, the Brahman.
