Chandogya Upanishad, one of the oldest Upanishad has been written during the Vedic Brahmana period. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. Chandogya Upanishad is the part of Chandogya Brahman that contains ten chapters. The 11th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the fire as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than water to which Sanatkumara replied that fire is greater than water. He explained that the fire first seizes the air and then warms the akasa or sky. The common men then say that the weather is hot and it would soon rain. Thus, water is created after the manifestation of heat. Furthermore, when thunderclaps roar with lightning upward and across the sky people say that there is lightning and thunder it would soon rain. Here also the manifestation of fire creates water. One must, thus, meditate on fire as Brahman. He is then able to obtain the world rich in fire and becomes radiant. He receives the world free of darkness. He who knows this and realises it becomes free and reaches as far as fire reaches.
