Urmila Sathyanarayanan is described as one of the most divine and devoted Bharathanatyam exponents among the advocators of her generation. As an intelligent child, under the noted guru Padmashri K. N.Dandayuthapani Pillai, she had her initial training. Guru Kalaimamani Smt. K.J.Sarasa later embellished her. Rhythmic movements and the immaculately clean and unused purity mark her performances and her perfect expressions reflect her intrinsic personal magnetism and uncontrollable feeling of spontaneous spirits. These all together create mesmerizing magic, which eventually captivates the viewer.
Urmila Sathyanarayanan has dedicated her fullest to the dance. With her accumulation of knowledge, skillfulness and above and beyond all other consideration, devotion, her performance in Bharathanatyam is getting richer day by day. At the same time Urmila also completed her University education and prevailed a degree in Arts. However, by making additions to her aggregation she continued her career elaborating her horizon. With her achievements, she moves ceaselessly in motion in the domain, Urmila soon founded her own institution, the "Natya Sankalpaa". Presently she is in an active manner engrossed in conducting training to aspiring students.
In several cities in India and abroad, Urmila has performed her compositions. Some of her most honored executions have been the Festival of Dances, New Delhi, the December Festival of the Madras Music Academy, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Narada Gana Sabha, Bharath Kalachar, Karthik Fine Arts and other prominent sabhas in the city, Inauguration of Ravindra Bharati, Hyderabad, India International Centre, New Delhi, Celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Indian Independence by the Government of TamilNadu, Citibank Festival of Dance Kalkshetra Foundation etc. throughout her career several titles have come her way. In the year 1997, she has been awarded the Tamil Nadu State Government title of "Kalaimamani", "The Sriram Award for Excellence" conferred by Karthik Fine Arts in the year 1997, "Yuva Kala Bharati" by Bharath Kalachar in the year 1993. She has also secured the grade A instituted by the Delhi Doordarshan Kendra. The Central Production Centre, New Delhi has also recorded her programme. For a best young dancer, she received the Narada Gana sabha award and the M.G.R. Award from the Madras Music Academy in the year 1992. Later she was awarded scholarship by the Government of India and a grant was permitted to her for the production of "Bharathi's Dream of An Independent India". A thematic demonstration namely "Sri Ranga Vaibhavam" has also been produced by Urmila Sathyanarayanan. This Chennai based dancer has also recently presented 'Shivam Narayanam', which is a thematic dance feature. This thematic show was staged at Austin and San Antonio in the US. The I.C.C.R., New Delhi has empanelled a list of Bharatanatyam artists in which her name is also included.
