10th Khanda of Chapter Eight

10th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the dream self. Prajapati here imparts knowledge about the real Self to Lord Indra.

10th Khanda of Chapter Eight, Chandogya UpanishadChandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 10th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the dream self. Prajapati here tells Lord Indra that one which enjoys in a dream the sense of being pleased by the achievement of an object is the Soul. It is fearless and deathless. It is the real Brahman. On hearing this Lord Indra went away satisfied but before he reached the gods he thought that although the dream self does not become blind even if the body is blind, its eyes and nose does not run when the eyes and nose of the body run; the self is not affected by the imperfections of the body, nor it is killed when the body is killed, nor does it become one eyed when the body becomes one eyed, yet they kill the dream self, as it were; they chase it, as it were. The Self thus, becomes conscious of pain and weeps as they were. He could not agree with the doctrine hence he returned back to Prajapati with fuel in hand to question him. On hearing him, Prajapati asked him to stay with him as he would further explain about the Self.
