Kirron Kher, the extremely talented actress was born on 14th June and has changed the spelling of her from Kiron to Kirron Kher due to strong beliefs in
numerology. She is as much known for her irresistible beauty as for her acting prowess. She is a woman of substance and once told her equally gifted husband
Anupam Kher that "life is not a success story, it is a love story". She comes from a background, which was not at all into acting. Her mother was a great film aesthete and was very much in love with good cinema. Her father was into army. It was her mother who inculcated the love of cinema in her. She was the one to introduce her to the films of Bimal Roy,
Satyajit Ray and
Guru Dutt.
At that tender age she was also exposed to the films of Japanese director Kurosawa and European cinema as well. As she had all the time to read about cinema gradually she became more and more immersed in it. Whenever Kirron used to see any movies she used to become obsessed with it for days. She used to start living in the movies.

Kirron Kher was also very much into sports and being an army brat she got all the opportunities to go for riding, swimming and badminton. Her sister captained the Indian badminton team and won several prestigious awards. But the acting bug had caught Kirron a bit too hard and she decided to pursue her career in acting soon after she enacted the first play of her life. The play was `My Fair` Lady` and she was the one to essay the role of Professor Higgins.
But her acting career majorly took off when she joined Punjab University`s English Department to pursue her Masters in English Literature. When she was in the first year of her Masters the renowned Punjabi playwright Mr. Balwannt Gargi came from America to set up the department of Indian Theater in Punjab University. When he came to the English department to audition for the lead role of a woman of 35, Kirron managed to bag the same being just 19. Soon after she joined the Indian theater and won a gold medal. Then she went to pursue a course in acting in
National School of Drama.
Following that she made a move to
Mumbai to try her luck in the `city of dreams`. After meeting some renowned directors who could not offer her more than some small petite roles she met Gautam Berry who was a budding actor and a wealthy businessman who fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. She tied the knot with him and shared a son with him as well but unfortunately their marriage did not work out.
They broke up in the year 1985. During the fifteen years break that she took from the industry she brought her son up and did some acting in the form of a small cameo in the film called `Pestonjee` where she played the mistress of
Anupam Kher and then another serial titled `Isi Bahne` which in spite of being a very haphazard production ran successfully. After that they both together appeared in the play called `Saalgirah`. People in the industry who did not know her theater background were amazed by her brilliant performance and said that she had outshone her husband in that performance.

Following that Kirron Kher did a chat show called `Purukshetra`. She loved doing that show as it was a woman who was not at all embarrassed to talk about sex and other taboos openly. She also found out that the male vulnerability was even more painful than that of women folks. After that she hosted another show for Doordarshan titled `Jagtey Raho with Kirron Kher`. Then she appeared in a dark film titled `Darmiyaan` which is based on the life of transgender and his mother who is a famous actress. The audience very well received the film but that did not fetch her the National Award.
But the very next film of hers called `Sardari Begum made her win the National Award which was her long cherished dream. And then she won the Netpac Award in Berlin for the
Bengali film `Bariwali`. After the stunning performance in `Bariwali` and then the colorful mother of Parvati in the Bollywood blockbuster `Devdas` she again created waves in the film industry and collected many accolades and wards with `Khamosh Pani`. The film won the top Golden Leopard Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival in the year 2003 and she won the award for the Best Actress. She has also done `
Main Hoon Na` another Bollwyood chartbuster with the Bollwyood Badshaah Shah Rukh Khan. She also won the Star Screen Best Supporting Actress 2006 for her brilliant performance in another Bollywood blockbuster `
Rang De Basanti`.
Though her role was a small emotional one yet it was quite an impressive one. Currently she is doing more of commercial movies while her husband is concentrating more on crossover movies. Such a great actress is not only loved by her huge fan following. She is idolized as well by many youngsters who want to make a mark in the profession of acting.
