Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park is an abode of some of the endangered species of world including Nilgiri Tahr.

The handful of national Parks that are prevalent in this part of India, Eravikulam National park is one of the most significant one. It has a spectacular, barren wild habitation, somewhat fifteen kms, north of Munnar of Western Ghat region. It is in the hub of the tea industry of this region.The park is famous for preserving one of the world`s rare species, Nilgiri Tahr. The topographical aura is largely exuberated by the spectacles of large mountainous ranges, undulating grass hills and thick evergreen `shoia forests`.

The story of the formation of Eravikulam National park deserves mentioning. Previously, it was a `game-hunting` ground, popularly known as Hamilton`s Plateau. In the late years of the nineteenth century, the North Travancore Land Planting Society owned up a large portion of this region.Eravikulam National Park It was discovered that the region was not at all suitable for tea plantations and so much later; the Kannan Dcvan Hill Produce Corporation undertook the grave responsibility of managing it as a personal hunting reserve. In the succeeding years of 1895, the High Range Game Preservation Association assured the protection and preservation of much of this abundant wild habitation. Then it was only recently in the year 1975, when the Kerala Government acknowledged it as a wildlife sanctuary. After three years, i.e. in the year 1978, it was promoted to the status of national, highly acknowledging its plethora of wild life and biodiversities.

The wealth of wilderness attracts the tourists from India and also from abroad. The amazing blooming of the `kurunj shrub`, the strolling of herds of tahr on steep slopes mesmerizes all the foreign tourists. . In order to catch glimpse of some of wildlife preserves, it is essential to endeavor deep into the Eravikulam National park. While undertaking a journey to the foothills of Anaimudi Hill, one gets easily exposed to flocks of Asian Elephant, Gaur, Lion-tailed Macaque, Leopard, giant squirrels. Tigers also are seen once in a while. Other mammalian species include Nilgiri Langur, Lion-tailed Macaque, Asian Elephant, Gaur (Indian Bison), Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog (Dhole), Rusty Spotted Cat, Small Indian Civet, Striped-necked Mongoose, Brown Mongoose, Clawless Otter, Common Otter, Large Brown Flying Squirrel, drizzled Giant Squirrel, Mouse Deer, Sambar, Barking Deer etc.

Green Tree ViperMore than hundred species of birds are found in every hook and nook of the Eravikulam National park. The Rufous-bellied Eagle and the Black-and-orange Flycatcher are seen only in limited areas of southwestern parts of Indian subcontinent. In the woodlands, one can hear the chirping of birds like Grey Junglefowl, Painted Bush Quail, Red Spurfowl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Alpine Swift, Malabar Trogon, Malabar Parakeet, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Spangled Drongo, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Malabar Lark, Nilgiri Pipit, Rufous Babbler, Grey-breasted Laughingthrush, White-bellied Shortwing, Hill Myna, Black Bulbul, Black-and-orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Little Spiderhunter etc. The bird raptors live in peaceful Black Eagle. Crested Goshawk, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Black Baza, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Pallid Harrier, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl. One can hear the howling of the hunting birds like Black Eagle. TahrFrequent day visits are prevalent for the tourists of Eravikulam National park, noted for its splendid scenic beauty. Main attraction is Tahr, which has a population of six hundred. These agile-hoofed creatures also draw admiration of the tourists and they can almost always be seen near Rajamalai in close proximity. The main entrance gate is located in the tourism hub that has been built on the park.

As far as the topography is concerned, Eravikulam National Park is extended over 97 sq km in the Rajamalai Hills of the Idukki district of Kerala. The park has an altitudinal measure ranging between 1,400 meter and an elevation of 2,695 meter, which is the height of Anaimudi, peninsular, the highest peak of Indian subcontinent. The park goes through experience of very profound rainfall and its continuous `shola` grassland ecological network, which makes the Eravikulam National Park to remain stand apart from all the other regions of the Western Ghats and its adjacent areas, in terms of beauty and forest luxuries.
