Amrita Singh was born on 9th February 1958 in a distinguished Sikh Punjabi family. Her father Shivinder Singh had served the Army and mother Rukhsana Sultana was a renowned socialite of Muslim Birth. Her great grandfather Sir Sobha Singh was a civil contractor and her great granduncle is the author Khushwant Singh. In 1991 she was married to the son of the Nawab of Pataudi, Saif Ali Khan who was twelve years younger to her. The couple had two children, Ibrahim and Sara. The couple has separated and Amrita now lives with her two children.

Film Career of Amrita Singh
Amrita Singh is a famous film actress, who had started her career in 1983 with the film `Betaab` with debutant Sunny Deol. The movie was a huge hit at the box office. She next went on to star in many other hit movies like Sunny (1984), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Mard (1985), Saaheb in (1985), Chameli Ki Shaadi and Naam in (1986), Khudgarz in (1987). She has also done few negative in movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) with ShahRukh Khan and Juhi Chawla and Aaina (1993) with Juhi Chawla and Jackie Shroff. Both the movies were a hit and won her several awards. Amrita later took a break from movies and retired to family life. In 2002 she returned with a character role in `23rd March 1931: Shaheed`, where she played the mother of Bhagat Singh played by Bobby Deol. In `Kalyug` she played an owner of illegal website and won many applauses. Her latest film was `Shoot out at Lokhandwala`. `Kavyanjali` in the STAR Plus channel was her debutant entry to small screen. In 1994 Amrita won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Aaina.
