The Plot
Ravana was given a boon that none of the God or spirit or demon will be able to kill him. He took advantage of this and started destroying everything. Since Brahma, gave him this boon, couldn`t take it back, he went to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu decided to be born as Dasharata`s son Rama. Dasharata had three wives, viz: Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra. Rama was Kaushalaya`s son. Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharata and Sumitra gave birth to twins named Shatrughna and Lakshman.
Since, Rama was the eldest son, King Dasharata, decided to make Rama his successor and the king of Ayodhya. However, his queen Kaikeyi asked, him for her two boons, which he had given her. Hence, she asked for her two boons, firstly to make Bharata the king and secondly, send Rama to exile for fourteen years in the terrible forest of Dandaka. In this way he had to fulfill her wish and send Rama to exile.
Rama, Sita and Lakshmana left for the jungle and found started their exile. While on exile, Ravana abducted Sita. This is when Rama took the help of vanara king Sugvira and Hanuman. They sent the vanara soldiers in all directions to find Sita. But this did not help till the time they met Sampati (brother of Jatayu). While Jatayu was physically stronger, Sampati had incredibly powerful vision. He could further than anyone else could see. When he came to know about Ravana`s killing his brother, he readily agreed to help them to find Sita. He spotted Sita in the Southern direction imprisoned in the garden of Ashoka trees on the island of Lanka. Later, when Rama fought a battle with Ravana, he was victorious and then Rama rescued Sita and then they all returned to Ayodhya.
However, slowly the whispers of long stay of Sita in Lanka spread through the whole city. All the citizens of Ayodhya forced Rama to banish her to the forest. So, he banished her to the forest where they had spent their years of exile. Without even a single word, Sita obeyed his orders. There she found the hermitage of Valmiki where she gave birth to two twins, Luv and Kush. Here she brought them up with the help of hermit who was their teacher.
When they were twenty years old, Rama began to think that the Gods were angry with him because he had killed Ravana who was the son of a Brahman. He became determined and wanted to win them through the Ashvamedha Yajna, in which he left a horse loose in the jungle. At the end of the year, his men found that two strong youths had caught the horse. At this, Rama went personally to the forest to just see that those two were his own sons Luv and Kush. Looking at this he requested Sita to come with him. But then, Sita refused and instead called out to Mother Earth to take her in the netherworld, with her. Then, the earth opened and took Sita with it leaving Rama to late to regret for his sins.
