Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary is a flat region with elephant grass and with patches of semi-green forest while Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the banks of Manas River. Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary is considered as one of the finest sanctuaries in the eastern region of the country. It is situated on the banks of Brahmaputra River. In the year 1940, this sanctuary was officially declared as a wildlife sanctuary and in the year 1976 it attained the status of national park. One of the most endangered species of the world the Great one-horned Rhinoceros can be found in this sanctuary. Further, this park is also known for its sizable population of Wild Buffalos, majestic tigers as well as elephants. The park also has a sizable population of rare exotic birds. On the other hand, Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is popular as one of the most picturesque and finest wildlife reserves of the country. It was established in the year 1928. This sanctuary is home to more than 20 endangered species of wild animals and birds.
Some of the other renowned national parks and wildlife sanctuaries of East India are Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary, Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary, Sundarbans Tiger Reserve, Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Sirohi Wildlife Sanctuary and Kanchenjunga National Park. Sundarbans is UNESCO World Heritage Site and it forms the largest Tiger Reserve in India. This place is also considered as a paradise for birdwatchers and it is the home to more than 250 tigers.
