Vibhishana Leaves Lanka in order to meet Rama and help him defeat the demon king Ravana. After Hanuman burned half of Lanka and returned again to Rama, Ravana called upon his council of ministers and discussed about the means of protecting the city and the army. Then his generals advised Ravana to give the charge of the battle to his son, Indrajit, while others, as Vajrahanu, Prahasta and Nikurribha, boasted that they alone would swallow up the monkey army. But Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana, advised the Lord of Lanka to settle the matter in a peaceful manner since he saw the destruction of the city by Rama in near future.
Vibhishana told Ravana to give Sita to Rama and thus end the probability of any combat with Rama and Lakshmana. He also told his brother to think of the deeds of Hanuman, a monkey and also informed his brother that since Sita was brought to Lanka the omens have been evil, fire was ever obscured by smoke, serpents were found in kitchens, the milk of kine ran dry, wild beasts howl around the palace. But Ravana rejected the proposal of Vibhishana outrightly, and boasted that he would hold Sita as his own, even if all the gods should war against him.
However, Ravana never used force against Sita till then since he was cursed by Lord Brahma long ago. Once Ravana had ill-used a celestial dame, and was cursed that if ever again did the like against the will of his victim then his head should break in a hundred pieces. And therefore Ravana was thin and passion-worn and weary, like a horse spent with a long journey, and he liked to compass the death of Rama and make Sita his own. Therefore he counseled again with his generals regarding a war against Rama and Lakshmana, but again he was opposed by Vibhishana. Ravana cursed his brother Vibhishana very rudely as treasonable and cowardly.
Vibhishana, when he could no more bear such insults, rose into the air along with his four personal followers, and told Ravana that he had spoken for his welfare but he refused it in the same way as a man on the threshold of death refuses medicine. After saying this he passed through the sky across the sea and reached the monkey host, and proclaimed himself as one who came to form an alliance with Rama. Most of the monkey leaders were unable to believe in the rakshasa even if he was not in disguise. However, Rama spoke to him fairly and told him that in return of his assistance in the war, Vibhishana would be set on the throne of Lanka after the defeat and death of Ravana.
