Ulhasnagar

Ulhasnagar is one of the city of Thane districts in Indian state of Maharashtra.

Ulhas river, which is flowing through the city Ulhasnagar, MaharashtraUlhas Nagar is also referred as Sindhunagar. Because most of the inhabitants of Ulhasnagar are from Sindhi community. The name Ulhasnagar derived from the Ulhas river, which is flowing through the city. `Ulhas` means happiness and `nagar` means city. So this is the `city of happiness`.

History
Sindhunagar or Ulhasnagar was built as a transit military camp during Second World War by British Government. After the war the place became vacant till Indian independence. During partition of India, Sindhi state went other side of India, which is now known as Pakistan and the Sindhis un-willingly, left their homes and come on the side of Bombay with no money in hands. Looking to the situation Indian Government decided to allot them the Sindhunagar camp.

Most of the Sindhis expected this as a temporary arrangement and they will go back to their native land. But their hope turned as dream only and they learnt slowly to live in this land. They started re-inventing their lost home and business here in India.

Economy
Sindhis are hard working community and very much business minded. Sindhunagar is famous for its quality Garments, Furniture, Electronics, Bags, Material Printing at very economic prices. Now the city has developed into an industrial Center, with manufactures including chemicals, silk and textiles. An industrial training center is also located in the city.

Ulhasnagar is also famous with the name as USA, which stands for Ulhasnagar Sindhi Association. During the business transition phase, when people were crazy for imported products, to protect the economic growth of the country and maintain the foreign exchange, some of the businessman came out with idea of selling items as MADE IN USA.But now a day the things are quite different. Sindhunagar doesn`t need any company`s brand name for selling products. Today Garments manufactured in Sindhunagar are exported to the whole world.

Geography
Ulhasnagar is located at 19.22°N and 73.15°E. It has an average elevation of 19 meters. The city is one of the western parts in India. Sindhunagar is at the distance of 60 kilometer from Mumbai. This city is centrally located between two main lines of central railway, Mumbai to Pune and Mumbai to Nasik.

The position of the city ensures a warm temperature throughout the year. The main climate variation is provided by rainfall. During summer the maximum temperature is 39°C and minimum is 20°C. The Ulhas river is the only source of getting usable water.

Government and politics
Municipal Corporation governs Ulhasnagar, where the mayor is responsible for the activities of the city services. A police commissioner, who is an IPS officer, maintaining law and order in Ulhasnagar society.

Transport
By Air: Nearest international and domestic airport is Mumbai.
By Rail: Kalyan, Vithalvadi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Shahad are the nearest railway stations to reach at Ulhasnagar.
By Road: There is no Bus service to this city. Only personal vehicles or taxis and auto rickshaws are available to the city.

Demographics
As per 2001 Census, Ulhasnagar had a population of 472,943. Males constitute 53% and female constitute 47% of the total population and 12% population is under six year of age. Ulhasnagar has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 80% and female literacy is 70%.

Culture
The common language used in Ulhasnagar is Sindhi, Marathi and English. Several cinema theatres are there for the entertainment of people.
Among visiting places Ambernath temple, Swami Shanti Prakash temple, Puj Jhulelal temple, Netaji Garden and Gol Maidan are the important ones.
