Ujjain - Ancient City

Ujjain is the ancient Indian city with great antiquity.

Ujjain, Ancient Indian CityUjjain is the name of an ancient city in India that possesses great antique value. The city was known as Avanti in the ancient period and it is considered as the first meridian by Hindu geographers and astronomers. The ancient city was located about a mile further south, and at present, it is lying buried in the earth, to the depth of about fifteen to eighteen feet. When the archaeologists excavate the city, they found its walls entirely and its pillars were unbroken, as well. Though there are not much of scientific explanations available for the strange fact, according to the Hindu fancy, it is so because of the intervention of the gods. The Hindu fancy has dressed it up in a mythological allegory as well and the allegory is believed to be the original form of the "Golden Ass of apuleius".
