Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple, Tirupparkadal, South IndiaSri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple is one of the significant Vishnu temple stationed in Tirupparkadal. Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple in Tirupparkadal is dedicated to Lord Prasanna Venkatesa. The deity is facing to the east and is enshrined in the main sanctum-sanctorum, which is called garbha-griha. The imposing four-armed image of Lord Prasanna Venkatesa, standing on an avudaiyar, is extremely fascinating. The image is found holding the conch (sankha) and discus (chakra) in His upper left and right hands respectively. His lower right hand is placed in the posture of abhaya mudra and lower left hand is seen resting on His thigh (kati-hasta).

The exquisite processional image (popularly known as utsava-murti) in this shrine belongs to Lord Vaikunthavasa. The deity here is seen holding a long rod (senkkol), flanked by Sri Devi and Bhu Devi. In Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple are also found other beautiful bronze icons of Nila Devi, Lord Navaneeta Krishna and a unique image of Sudarsana (Chakrattazhvar) with Lord Narasimha in the front and not at the back as is usually seen in most places. Right in front of the principal sanctum is erected a small shrine for Garuda, the sacred deity who is here referred to as Ashta Naga Garuda. The name is like this because the image of Garuda is found here surrounded by eight snakes. The sanctums for the Lord`s consort, Goddess Alarmeimangai and Sri Andal are utsava Muni, Tirupparkadai located to the right and left of the main shrine respectively. This structure of the temple and the images testify the excellent sculptural craftsmanship of the artists.

The ardha-mandapa in this single-prakara temple houses the images of some of the Azhvars. The Azhvars or the preceptors housing in the temple are venerated as the lord by the devotees. They also offer their worship to this preceptors. In the courtyard outside there are erected smaller sub-shrines dedicated to the deities like Sri Vedanta Desika, Lord Krishna, who are flanked by their consorts, Rukmini and Satyabhama, Sri Anjaneya and Sri Tirukkacchi Nambi. They are placed in this shrine because they are said to have very close association with Lord Varadaraja of Kanchipuram.

Srivan Sathakopa Sri Parankusa Ramanuja Yatindra Maha Desika

The association of this place with Pundarika Maharishi is a legendary episode. This association is also evident from the fact that vimana above this principal sanctum is named as Pundarika Vimana. The sacred tank situated right in front of the entrance to the temple is called Pundarika Pushkarini, which has attached a picturesque view to the temple. A number of festivals are organized to the temple throughout the temple when a large number of people flocked in the temple precinct. The codes of the Vaikhanasa Agama are followed with regard to the Puja and rituals in this shrine.
