The Sudarsana shrine in the Kalamegha Perumal temple at Tirumoghur near Madurai is a significant place. It is considered as a consecrated Divya Desam and is very well-known. Here, Lord Sri Sudarsana is the presiding deity. The temple houses an imposing image of lord. He is seen with sixteen hands holding sixteen different weapons. Sri Sudarsana, as in the Varadaraja Svami temple, is placed in the magnificent posture of moving forward. The posture of the Lord was described by Sri Vedanta Desika in Sudarsanashtakam, by his very famous hymn praising Sri Sudarsana. On the opposite side of this image is placed the figure of Lord Narasimha in a Yogic posture. The utsava-murti or processional image of Sri Sudarsana here is just like the moolavar. It represents the figure of Lord Narasimha at the rear. It is believed that it is rare to find the moola-vigraha and utsava-vigrahas being identical in the same place. It is one of the most important sacrosanct in Tamil Nadu.
