Shri Avlokik Teerth located in Madhya Pradesh is a Jain pilgrimage centre. The teerth kshetra is situated in the centre of the Hasampura village. The temple is dedicated to Lord Parshvanatha, the twenty-third Jain Tirthankara.
History of Shri Avlokik Teerth
According to history Shri Avlokik Teerth dates back to the ancient times. It is believed that that temple belongs earlier than the tenth century of the Vikram Samvat Era. As per an inscription, the temple was renovated in the year V.S. 1649. The Hasampura village once served as the street of the city of Ujjain during the rule of King Vikramaditya. Here palaces of King Vikramaditya and the queen were built. It is now called Ranikot. The teerth kshetra is associated with many miracles and legends. According to one legend once the Shravakas thought of relocating the idol of Lord Parshvanatha to Ujjain. After many discussions they entered the temple to take the idol. There they saw a snake moving its head indicating its refusal about their decision. The Shravakas thus gave up their idea. On account of many such miracles, the temple is highly revered and held in high esteem. The idol of Lord Parshvanatha is believed to possess miraculous powers. Devotees from far off places visit the temple to offer their prayers. It is believed that if prayed with all devotion the Lord fulfils the wishes of the pilgrims.
Temple of Shri Avlokik Teerth
The temple of Shri Avlokik Teerth houses the idol of Lord Parshvanatha. This eleventh century temple has been magnificently decorated with intricate artistic designs. The creative temple work boast about the skills of the craftsmen. The walls and pillars of the temple are adorned with specimens of ancient art. These have been painted attractively and enhance the beauty of the temple. In this temple, there are metal idols of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras. The idol of Lord is 110 cm in height and is black in colour. It is seated in a padmasana posture. The idol has been beautifully carved from a single stone and looks very appealing. The smiling face of the Lord looks very calm and serene. Under the palms of the hands of the idols, there are images of two snakes.
The Temple of Shri Avlokik Teerth organises many annual gatherings and functions. There are provisions for dharamshalas or rest houses for the pilgrims. These are well equipped with all modern facilities. Apart from this there are Upashrays, an Ayambilshala and a Jnanabhandar. The temple is enclosed by scenic beauty that mesmerises and fascinates the pilgrims. The calm and tranquil environment and the surrounding greenery make it a suitable place for religious activities. The kshetra is well connected to road, rail and air. Taxi services and bus services are easily available here. The nearest railway station of Ujjain is located at a distance of 11 kilometres.
