Sarat Chandra Bose was a legal representative and Indian independence activist. He was the son of Janakinath Bose and elder brother of Subhas Chandra Bose. Sarat Chandra Bose, throughout his long political career was a restless spirit, full of ideas, impatient for action, and distrustful of compromises.
Early Life of Sarat Chandra Bose
Sarat Chandra Bose was born on 6th September 1889 in Kolkata. He was the fourth child of Janakinath who was a lawyer and Prabhabati Devi, who were extensively respected in the community. Sarat Chandra Bose"s forefathers had served the Afghan leaders of pre-Mughal Bengal with great distinction. He studied in Presidency College, then studied in University of Calcutta, and then went to England in 1911 to become a barrister. He began a flourishing legal practice upon his homecoming to India, but later discarded it to join the Indian independence association.
Political Career of Sarat Chandra Bose
Sarat Chandra Bose was immensely influenced by the great congress leader Chittaranjan Das and joined the Indian National Congress. He actively took part in the Non-Cooperation Movement. Within few days he became a well known leader in the Indian National Congress. Sarat Chandra Bose was selected as the president of the Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee in 1936. He was the member of the All India Congress Committee from 1936 to 1947. Sarat Chandra Bose was the leader of Indian National Congress in the Central Legislative Assembly. He helped a lot to form the Indian National Army which was later led by his brother Subhas Chandra Bose. In 1946, he was given the charge of the Works, Mines and Powers ministry in the Interim Government. In 1947 he strongly opposed against partition and resigned All India Congress Committee.
Awards of Sarat Chandra Bose
Sarat Chandra Bose Memorial Lecture was instituted and the maiden lecture was delivered by international historian Leonard Abraham Gordon in January 2014, who has penned a combined biography of Sarat Chandra Bose and his younger brother Subhas Chandra Bose, titled Brothers against the Raj. A statue of Sarat Chandra Bose is located beside Calcutta High Court.
Personal Life of Sarat Chandra Bose
Sarat Chandra Bose married Bivabati Devi in 1910 and they had eight children of which the sons are namely Dr. Asoke Nath Bose, Amiya Nath Bose, Sisir Kumar Bose and Subrata Chandra Bose. His daughters" names are Mira Roy, Gita Biswas, Roma Roy Choudhury and youngest daughter Professor Chitra Ghosh is a distinguished academician and a social scientist and also a member of the parliament. Sarat Chandra Bose died in 1950, in Kolkata.
