Sapp, Percussion Instrument, PunjabSapp is a percussion instrument popular in the Punjab state of India. The instrument is also known "Chhikka" and is mainly popular in the Punjabi folk music genre. Sapp is also spelled as Sap or Supp.

Design of Sapp
It is generally made of robust wood (Black Taali) with many X shaped small parts. These instruments are generally very sturdy and almost unbreakable. Sapp is sometimes adorned with pom-poms and even pieces of brightly coloured paper stuck in cut-out patterns.

Playing of Sapp
Usually, the playing of this percussion instrument started with the right hand. It is also played by the expanding and collapsing with both the hands. Thus, it can be said that it is actually the symbols of the arms. If it is being played by many together then they should be trained in a proper manner. It then makes a unique clapping sound.

Usage of Sapp in Dances
The traditional musical instrument is specially used to accompany folk dances such as Malwai Giddha, luddi and Bhangra, and also for others. The Bhangra dancers clap Sapp while performing jumps, squats or simple bhangra moves to display synchronicity. The incorporation of this percussion instrument makes the dances look more energetic.
