Samaresh Basu (11 December 1924 - 12 March 1988) was born in Bikrampur which is now in Bangladesh. Brata-kathas which are folk-tales recited by women while performing certain religious rites have had a deep influence on him as a child. He had spent his adolescent years in Naihati in West Bengal. He used to sell eggs from a basket carried on his head. He worked for meagre daily wages. He worked in an ordinance from 1943 through 1949 in an ordnance factory in Ichhapore. He was also an active member of the trade union and the Communist party for a certain period. He was also jailed when this party was declared illegal. While he was in jail, he wrote his first novel, Uttaranga. After his release from jail he began to write professionally.
His next novel was he wrote his first novel Nayanpurer Mati. Adaab was his first short story that was published in 1946. He has composed more than 200 short stories and 100 novels which also include those written under the pen names "Kalkut" and "Bhramar". He is a prominent figure in Bengali fiction. His themes ranged from political activism to life of working class to sexuality. His Amritakumbher Sandhane was a popular semi-autobiographical narrative that focussed on Kumbha mela. The following books depicted lives of the common people from all over India and all walks of life with their varied cultures and religious practices. Shamba is modern interpretation of Indian Puranas. It won the Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1980.
