Sakshi Gopala temple is also known as Satyabadis. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is considered that this temple was built in the 19th century. A legend is also associated with this temple. It is believed that Lord Krishna had arrived at this temple to end a dispute between two Brahmins.
It is believed King Prataprudra Deva brought the image of Lord Krishna after his victory in Kanchi. The idol of Lord Krishna depicts him with a flute and Radha standing on his left. It is believed that the temple is a miniature of the Jagannath Temple of Puri. This temple is located in the town of Saksi Gopal at Satyabadi near Puri. The temple possesses a Kalinga style of temple architecture.
There is another legend that is attached to this temple. A poor young man of the village fell in love with the daughter of the village headman. The village headman opposed the match. The villagers went on a pilgrimage to Kashi that included the headman and the young man. The village headman fell ill and he was abandoned by fellow villagers. The young man looked after him so well that he soon got well and promised his daughter in marriage to the young man. As soon everyone returned to the village the headman asked the young man to produce a witness in support of his claim.
Lord Gopal was impressed by the young man`s devotion. He became the witness to the promise on one condition that the young man lead the way and he would follow, but the young man must never look back. He did so but near the village was a mound of sand on which as they passed, the man could not hear the Lord`s footsteps and turned back. Immediately the Lord turned into a statue of stone. The villagers were so impressed that God himself came to back the young man`s claim that the youngsters were married off. They were appointed as the first priests of the temple that was built in honour of Lord Gopal who became the witness later which is known in Sanskrit as Sakshi.
