Rudrasagar Lake is also known as Rudijala which is a natural sedimentation reservoir. It is a famous lake located in the state of Tripura. It has been recognized by the Government of India`s Ministry of Environment and Forests as a wetland having national importance for sustainable use and conservation based on its socio economic importance and bio-diversity. It has been also declared as wetland of international importance by the Secretary General, convention on wetlands, Ramsar site.
Geography of Rudrasagar Lake
Rudrasagar Lake is situated in the Melaghar Block of Sonamura Sub-Division of Sipahijala district. The lake forms a geographical area of 2.4 kilometres and situated at a distance of about 52 kilometres from the state capital of Tripura. It receives stream from three permanent streams namely, Noacherra, Durlavnaraya cherra and Kemtali cherra.
Climate of Rudrasagar Lake
The region receives an annual rainfall of 2500 mm, usually in the months from June to September. Lately, the problem of soil erosion in catchment area of the lake has been observed which has reduced the lake area. The siltation in the lake and degradation in catchment area has also reduced the lake area which was previously around 1950. Urbanization in the surrounding areas, deforestation and immersion of religious idols are some of the main underlying causes of the depletion.
A palace known as "Neermahal" (Water Palace) is situated near the north-east bank of the lake. It was constructed by the then Tripura king Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in between 1935–1938 as summer resort. Rudrasagar is a budding Important Bird habitat Area and attracts a large number of waterfowls during winter. Among the rarer species recorded are the Ferruginous Duck.
