River Tern

River Tern of Indian bird of Tern family breeds in the inland rivers of Arabia, Indian states and Myanmar.

River Tern, Indian BirdRiver Tern is an Indian bird that bears a scientific name "Sterna aurantia" of tern family, and it is a resident breeder of inland rivers of Iran and Arabian countries. Later in the winter season, it migrates towards the Indian sub continent. River tern is found in the midst of the Western Ghats Mountain Range in India of Chikmaglur district in Karnataka, surrounded by the lofty hill ranges of Baba Budangiri, Karnataka.

Breeding Season of River Tern
River Tern is the species that breeds from March to May in colonies in less accessible areas such as sandbanks in rivers.

Nests of River Tern
River Tern nests in a ground scrape regions and it is often on bare rock or sand, and lays three greenish-grey to buff eggs, which are blotched and streaked with brown.

Sizes of River Tern
River Tern is a medium-sized tern, 38 to 43 cm long with dark grey upperparts, white under parts, a forked tail with long flexible streamers, and long pointed wings. The bill is yellow and the legs red. It has a black cap in breeding plumage. In the winter the cap is greyish white, flecked and streaked with black, there is a dark mask through the eye, and the tip of the bill becomes dusky.
