Ramtek

Mythical stories define the city of Ramtek in Nagpur District, Maharashtra. Ramtek is located at 21.4degN 79.33degE. It is believed that Ramtek was the place where Rama, the Hindu god, rested while he was in exile.

The city and municipal council is famous for its Ram temple. As per legends Ramtek is the place where Lord Rama rested alongwith his wife, Sita and brother, Lakshmana after being banished from Ayodhya. The ashram of sage Agastya was also said to be nearby Ramtek. The, demons regularly attacked the ashram disrupting the religious rites (yagnas) performed by the rishis. Distressed to hear about such incidents Lord Rama took it upon himself to slay the demons and took a vow. The name of the place is thus derived from Rama`s vow and literally means the same (`Tek` is local language means vow). Thus it is believed locally that whoever takes a vow at Ramtek is blessed by the gods for its fulfilment. The `padukas` of Lord Ram are believed to have been worshipped here for centuries.

The existing temple is believed to have been built by the King of Nagpur, Raghuji Bhonsale, after his victory over Deogarh fort in Chindwara. Besides, Ramtek is also associated with the epic poet, Kalidasa. He is said to have written Meghadoota in the hills of Ramtek. Though primarily a visit to Ramtek is religious in nature but the beautiful Khindasi Lake also attracts visitors.
