Rajkumar is an award winning Kannada actor. In Karnataka he has won the highest number of awards for his contribution to Kannada films. His fans have conferred him with titles, such as, Natasarvabhouma and Annavru. He was born as Mutturaju but after his debut in the Kannada film industry his name was changed to Rajkumar. Besides being a prolific actor Rajkumar is also a talented singer. He has been actively involved with playback singing as well. His voice was referred to as kogile kanta (one who can sing like a cuckoo).

Rajkumar began his acting career in the theatres with his father. It was here that he sharpened his acting skills and finally made his foray into films with Bedara Kannappa in 1954. The film was directed by H L N Simha. After this film there was hardly any looking back for the Kannada actor. Dr. Rajkumar became one of the most versatile Kannada actors of all times. Whether it was a mythological character, a romantic one, comic role or action hero, he would play all the roles with equal ease. He has acted opposite gifted Kannada actresses, such as, Pandaribai, Leelavathi, Jayanti, Bharati, Aarathi, Jayaprada, Madhavi, Geetha, Sarita and others. The list of directors with whom he had worked includes B.R. Pantulu, Puttanna Kanagal to Shankar Nag and Nagabharana. Barring one or two he has only remained involved with Kannada films. In fact Rajkumar has acted in more than 200 movies only in Kannada.

An eminent playback singer, Rajkumar, He won the National Award for the song "Naadamaya" (Jeevana Chaitra). His devotional songs were very popular amongst the masses. At a later stage of his career he has lent his voice to several actors as well.

As a reward to his histrionic skills Rajkumar had been the recipient of several awards in his lifetime. He won state awards in the best actor category 9 times and also bagged 10 Filmfare awards. Rajkumar was felicitated with the Padma Bhushan Award in 1983 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. The prolific actor passed away on April 13, 2006 leaving a void behind him that was never to be filled.
