Pustidevi Temple

Pustidevi Temple is one of the Valabhi Temples of North India in Uttarakhand. The temple is tastefully decorated.

Pustidevi Temple, UttarakhandPustidevi Temple is one of the famous Valabhi Temples of North India located in Uttarakhand in Almora District. The temple is located behind the Mahamrtyunjaya Temple. This purvabhimukha i.e. east facing small stone temple stands in a simple adhisthana and comprises of a small rectangular garbagriha and a kapila in its talachhanda yojana i.e. ground plan. Their external measurements are 3.30 x 2.30m and 0.60 x 2.52m respectively.

About 4.75m high urdhachhanda yojana meaning elevation of the temple includes simple adhisthana, vedibandha, jangha and valabhi. The adhisthana is made of a simple bhitti. The vedibandha comprises khura, kumbha, antarpatra and kapotapali. Lower part of jangha consists of a plain pattika. A rathika placed on the bhadra bhaga of the jangha, on each parsva is decorated with ruchaka pilasters and crowning udgama. Some of the pilasters are with ghata pallava motif of their lower and upper portions.

The varandika is decorated with a row of two tulas, comprising a plain pattika placed between two tulla registers. The Valabhi is made in two parts. The parsvas of the skandavedi and the valabhi are decorated with a grand sursenaka and the chandrasala motif. A rathika crowned by a udgama is shown in the centre of sursenaka and a phulla padama within the chandrasala. At present amalaka and sardula are not present on the top of a valabhi.

The panchasakha pravesadvara meaning doorway is decorated with stambha and padma puspa sakhas. The sukanasa placed above the kapila comprises a temple may be dated to early 8th century A.D.
