Purushottamdas Tandon was a well-known freedom fighter and the member of the Constituent Assembly of India.

Purushottamdas Tandon , Indian Freedom FighterPurushottamdas Tandon was born at Allahabad on 1st August 1882. He did his graduation from the Muir Central College in 1904.After that he passed M.A in history. He obtained a degree in Law and started practicing in 1906.Purushottamdas Tandon joined the Allahabad High Court as a junior lawyer Under Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru. For a brief period he served as the Law Minister of the Nabha State. He resigned from this post in 1917. Purushottamdas Tandon was associated with Indian National Congress from his college days. To participate in the freedom movement he gave up his legal practice in 1921.In this year : Purushottamdas Tandon took part in the Non-cooperation Movement and was imprisoned for the first time by the British. Mahatma Gandhi fondly called Shri Tandon `Rajarshi`.

In 1918 he established Allahabad District Peasants` Committee to develop the condition of the poor farmers. Purushottamdas Tandon successfully led the `No Tax` campaign in 1930.He also organized several Kishan Sabhas seeking coordination from the farmers in the freedom struggle. He served as the speakers in the Legislative assembly of Uttar Pradesh. In 1946 he was selected as the member of Constituent Assembly of India. : Purushottamdas Tandon left politics due to his bad health condition. After that he worked mostly for the promotion of Hindi language. He was associated with Hindi Sahitya Sammelan and the Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti. : Purushottamdas Tandon wanted that the student should learn the culture and tradition of India. In 1961 Purushottamdas Tandon was awarded the `Bharat Ratna` -the highest civilian award of India. He left the mortal coil on 1 July 1962.
