The Rajputs had great faith in their religion. As a result there are a number of shrines throughout the state. As rulers they followed a policy of religious tolerance. Hence besides the temples there are Jain temples and mosques in Rajasthan. One of the most important pilgrimage centers for Hindus is the Brahma Temple in Pushkar. It is the sole shrine in India that is dedicated to Brahma. Pushkar is one of the five vital pilgrimage centres besides Chaar Dhaam of Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram and Dwarka for Hindus. Here every year, on the full moon of November, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gather to bathe in the sacred lake. On this eve the largest camel fair in Rajasthan takes place.
At a distance of 14 kilometers lies the city of Ajmer. This place is famous for Ajmer-e- Sharif, the dargah or mosque of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centers for the Muslims. Moin-ud-din Chisti was a Sufi saint whose compassion for the poor and the weak won him followers from all walks of life and from all religions. He was also known as Garib Nawaz.
Adhai -din- ka- Jhonpra is also a popular tourist attraction here. the mosque has been so named because it was constructed was completed in two and a half days. It was built by Mohammad Gori by dismantling a Jain religious college.
The Mughals have contributed greatly in construction of several monuments and the Jama Masjid in Ajmer was built by Shah Jahan. It has been built in pristine white marble. Tonk is one of the places in Rajasthan that is dotted with several magnificent mosques. It is often referred to as the `Lucknow of Rajasthan.`
The temple of Karni Mata at Deshnok is unique in itself. Dedicated to the mother goddess it is inhabited by hordes of rats which are revered. It is located near Bikaner. Devi Kund is located at a distance of 8 kilometers from Bikaner. Here the cenotaphs of the rulers of Bikaner were built. Other temples located in Rajasthan are Nathdwara, Khatu Shyamji Temple and Baba Ramdeo Temple.
Rajasthan is scattered with several Jain temples. These shrines are dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras. Most of these are built out of white marble and are famous for their architectural grandeur. The most famous amongst these is the Dilwara Jain Temple in Mount Abu. This temple is popular for its architecture. The fine carvings made out white marble is truly astounding. The main attractions at Dilwara are the 2 temples dedicated to Adinath and Neminath. While Adinath was built in 1031 AD and is dedicated to the first Tirthankar Neminath was erected in 1230 AD to celebrate the 22nd Jain Tirthankar. Others include Sri Mahavirji Temple, Osian Jain Temple and there are shrines also at Ranakpur and Lodurva.
Jagdish Temple in Udaipur was built in the mid17th century. it houses a remarkable bronze statue of Garuda facing his revered Lord Vishnu.
The temple of Eklingji, the Shaiva patron deity of the Udaipur royal house is 24 km by road from Udaipur. Eklingji Temple is carved from marble.
There are numerous temples and mosques in Rajasthan that are situated within the high walls of the forts.
