Nalbari District has been the birthplace of some famous people who have significant contribution in Indian society. They have provided the district with institutions which, till date, help in flourishing different aspects of artistry. They have also enriched the cultural heritage of the district.
Adya Sarma
Adya Sarma was born in the Khudra Makhibaha village in the year 1930. He was popularly known as "Guruji". In collaboration with Bhuban Ch. Das, he started Sitralaya institution at Nalbari in the year 1946. "Rang Ghar" was another art institution started by him at Nalbari. It is presently famous as "Nalbari Art School". He had excelled in sculpturing and oil painting and also played crucial role in the designing of Hari Mandir. Throughout his life he had created exquisite masterpieces of art and had trained a number of students in the same field. Many of his students later emerged as successful artists. Adya Sarma has always stayed in his own world of artistry, away from limelight. His immense devotion towards art has been evident in his finest forms of paintings and sculptures.
Sarat Mazumdar
Sarat Mazumdar was born in Marowa Village of Nalbari district in the year 1935. Since early age, he knew a number of tricks for entertaining his friends. His career started as a tailor under Bhjabit Baisya, however, opting this profession became a turning point of his life. Arun Baisya who was associated with "Sankardev Arun Natya Gosthi" came in contact with him during this time and inspired him to join Nataraj Opera. Later he also joined theatre groups such as "Rupjyoti", "Basudev Opera", "Nat Bani Natya Samaj" and "Purbajyoti". Sarat Mazumdar also formed his own theatre party or Natya dal. Finally in the year 1968 he created Theatre Bhagyadevi which marked the initiation of mobile theatre movement in the district of Nalbari. Later, a number of mobile theatres emerged in the district which gradually became the inseparable part of the culture of the district.
