Natharam Gaud was born in a very poor Brahmain family of Dariyapur village, Aligarh district in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The year was 1875, from his childhood he was forced to beg so as to provide for his parents. Ironically, his sonorous voice and handsome personality became an asset in begging. These qualities attracted the Nautanki artist Chiranjilal, who educated and inducted him in his troupe. Later renamed the Natha-Chiranji Swang Mandali, it became widely known and very popular, eventually led by Gaud after his mentor`s death. Gaud wrote or commissioned over 100 scripts like Satya Harishchandra i.e. `Truthful Harishchandra`, Syahposh, etc.
Natharam Gaud died in 1943.
