Namsai District, the 18th district of Arunachal Pradesh state, was formed on 25th November 2014 on the approval of Arunachal Pradesh government of Nabam Tuki. Namsai, the headquarters of this district, is popular for several Buddhist "viharas" in the Khampti settlement area, which are locally called "Chong". Chong of Namsai and Manmao are the major centers of the Theravada sect in Arunachal Pradesh.

There are several tourist spots in Namsai, which are Namsai Reserve Forest, which has both tropical and sub-tropical features with lush green dense vegetation and a wide range of flora and fauna. There is Piyong reserve Forest with natural beauty and biodiversity. Kamlang Reserve Forest and Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary is known for their varied floral and faunal diversity with rare species of hillock gibbon, takin and endangered tiger.
Apart from natural forest, Glow Lake is another attraction at Namsai. The lake offers scenic views and scopes for adventure tourism. Among other tourist attractions, Golden Pagoda Monastery, locally known as `Kongmu Kham` is noteworthy. It is one of the largest monasteries of North-Eastern India.

Chabua Airport in Dibrugarh, Assam and Digboi Railway Station in Digboi, Assam are the nearest to reach Namsai. National Highway 27 connects this place to other parts of the country. Regular buses are available to Namsai from other cities of Arunachal Pradesh.
