Nagamalai is located almost 10 km away from Madurai City in Tamil Nadu. The city is surrounded by eight hillocks.

Nagamalai is located at a distance of almost 10 km away from Madurai City in Tamil Nadu. It is a suburb of Madurai situated beside the Madurai-Theni highway. The city of Madurai remains enclosed by eight hillocks.

Geography of Nagamalai
These once acted as a guard for the city from invaders. Pasumalai, Yanaimalai, and Nagamalai are the three most important hills among the five of them. These hills are also known as Cow, Elephant, and Snake Hill respectively. The Samanar Hill located opposite to Nagamalai, has historical events associated with it. Naturally formed rocks are visible atop the hills. These resemble a crocodile. No water can be found at the top of the hill but herbal water flows on one side at Puluthu. The Samanars, the Tamil Jain were believed to have resided on the hill. Several stone statues and different relics can be seen in Nagamalai. The town is also famous for its snake biodiversity. The government has planned to construct an ecotourism snake park in the town.

Educational Institutions in Nagamalai
To cater to the needs of education, Nagamalai has established many schools for children. Some of the important schools located here are S. Vellaichamy Nadar College of Science and Arts, S.B.O.A. Higher Secondary School, Annapakiyam School and Sirumalar, Akshara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Jayaraj Nadar School and others. The Madurai Kamaraj University is also situated in Nagamalai.
