Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary is also referred to as `Mitiyala Grasslands` and is situated near the region of Mitiyala in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Prior to Indian independence from the British Raj, Mitiyala belonged to the princely state of Bhavnagar in the year 1947. During 2004, this wildlife sanctuary was granted the official status of a protected area, which measures about 18.22 square kilometres.
This ecological refuge provides shelter to nearly 11 to 12 leopards and lions, blue bulls or `nilgais` and also spotted deers. The lions existent in Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary often run into the Sasan Gir Forest, since this latter is located quite close to Mitiyala Sanctuary. Visitors would notice some beautiful Asiatic Lions and other wild beasts wandering about freely, in this sanctuary. Leopards and lions dwelling inside the boundaries of Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary can be seen sharing space with other creatures, in a rugged terrain, complete with scrubs and grasses. The wild boars which are existent in large groups, are said to hunt their prey which might include little reptiles and other animals.
Winters are the best time to pay a visit to Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary and travellers would relish the beauty of nature, combined with that of the wildlife found here. However, lions and leopards might not be always visible to tourists immediately after their arrival in the sanctuary. One must patiently wait in order to catch sight of the king of the jungle and meanwhile admire the different species of birds and animals available in the vicinity.
