Manik Sarkar is the current Chief Minister of Tripura and a Polit Bureau Member of Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Manik Sarkar, Chief Minister of TripuraManik Sarkar is the current Chief Minister of Tripura. He has been appointed to this post since March 1998. This prominent leader of Students Federation of India is governing Tripura in a coalition named the Left Front. Manik Sarkar swore in his oath on 10th March 2008 and headed the sixth Left Front government. He is a Polit Bureau Member of Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Early Life of Manik Sarkar
Manik Sarkar was born on January 22nd, 1949, in a middle class family, at adhakishorepur, South Tripura. He joined impulsively into the student`s movement during his early academic career. The movement was against the then Congress government of Tripura. Manik Sarkar has played a very vital and dynamic role in this mass movement. He was inducted into the CPI (M) party through this movement. In the year 1968, he became a member of CPI (M). At that time he was only a student of the premier educational institution of the state, the MBB College.

Political Career of Manik Sarkar
Manik Sarkar had become the General Secretary of MBB College Student`s Union. He was nominated as the SFI candidate and later he also held the post of the SFI State Committee Secretary and of Vice President of the all India Committee of SFI in speedy progression. He acquired a Degree in Commerce from University of Calcutta. Sarkar was selected a member of the CPI (M) State Committee in the year 1972, and was seated into the party state Secretariat in the year 1978. In that very same year the Left Front government for the first time had assumed office.

Manik Sarkar in a meeting In the year 1985, Manik Sarkar became a member of the party Central Committee, at the 12th Party Congress held in 1985. In 1980, his first stretch as an MLA geared up. In a by-election of the State Assembly, at that time he was elected as a CPI (M) candidate from Agartala Town constituency. Sarkar became the State Left Front Convener and the State Secretary of the CPI (M). In 1998 Sarkar

has been elected from the Dhanpur Assembly Constituency in the Tripura Legislative elections under Sonamura Sub - Division, West Tripura. Manik Sarkar became member of the CPI (M) politburo in 1998.

Manik Sarkar thus created political history in Tripura by becoming Chief Minister for third straight term. He contested Assembly Elections for the fifth time since 1981 and won from Dhanpur in west Tripura for the third consecutive time.

Personal Life of Manik Sarkar
Manik Sarkar is married to his wife Panchali Bhattacharjee, who is an officer of the Central Social Welfare Board, which is a Government of India undertaking. Sarkar, the 59-year-old Marxist, is a non-smoker and teetotaller who live a very modest life.
