Located in the Mahendragarh district in the Indian state of Haryana, the Mahendragarh Fort was built during the 19th century by the Maratha ruler, Tantia Tope. Mahendragarh is one of the very few districts in India where the name of the district and its main town are different.
Etymology of Mahendragarh Fort
In the year 1861, the fort was named as Mahendragarh by Narendra Singh, the ruler of Patiala. He named the fort Mahendragarh in honour of his son Mahendra Singh and consequently the town came to be known by the same name.
Design of Mahendragarh Fort
The Mahendragarh Fort is a square shaped structure that was until recently being used as a court complex. Surrounded by high walls, there are two storied residential structures inside the perimeter of the fort walls. Until recently the Mahendragarh Fort was in a decrepit state but currently it is being restored along the lines of Pinjore Gardens, to develop it as a part of the international tourist destination circuit in Haryana.

The Narnaul railway station is the closest at a distance of almost 40 km from the fort and the Indira Gandhi International Airport is the nearest at a distance of about 140 km.
