Lalgudi is located in Tiruchirapalli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a town situated at a distance of almost 20 kms from Tiruchirapalli. The town is on NH 227 that links Tiruchirapalli and Chidambaram. Coleroon River and Ayyan Vaikal are located close to the town. Lalgudi assembly constituency is under the Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency. The nearest village from Lalgudi is Punjai Sangenthi.

Lalgudi has set up many schools and colleges to grant education to the students of the town. Some of the important schools are the government run Lalgudi Boys Higher Secondary School, the Management run Girls Higher Secondary School, Anne`s Primary Convent, Panchayat Union Middle School, Government Elementary Schools, Lions Mat Higher Secondary School, Sri Vivekananda Matriculation School and St. Anne`s Girls High School. The government run school encompass most of the rural boys and girls and is almost 100 years old. The town has also established an arts and science college. It is maintained by the government. A nearby village Kumulur located almost 4 kms away from Lalgudi has set up Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute (AEC&RI) under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. It is spread over an area of 300 acres of land. A polytechnic college is also located in Lalgudi. Apart from this Saraswathy Teacher Training College has been stated in Manthurai in Lalgudi.
Pilgrimage Centres in Lalgudi
Lalgudi is an important pilgrimage centre visited by many devotees from different places. The Saptharishieeswarar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is of the prominent temples here. It was built by the rulers of the Chola Dynasty. It is said that the Tamil Appar had visited the temple. The Shiva lingam of this temple differs in its structural pattern from other lingams. Its upper portion has a vertical wedge type of cut and is red in colour. Apart from this the temple also houses an idol of Goddess Parvati. Another important shrine, the Ayyanar Temple was constructed during the Chola period. Senni Vaikkal, a nearby village located almost 4 kms away from Lalgudi houses a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The lingam is made of Maragatham i.e. emerald and is `Karupacchai` i.e. black green in colour. The temple also houses the idol of Meenakshi Sundareswarar. According to mythology it is stated that the temple was constructed by Kumbera`s sons who came down from heaven. It is also believed that they offered leaves of vilva tree to the Lord that turned into gold. The temple is maintained by the Koil Gurukkal. The shrine is almost in ruined state and requires renovation.
