Kundan

Kundan is the process of embedding semi precious stones on the Rajasthani jewelleries.

Kundan, Jewellery for Women in RajasthanKundan is the process of setting gemstones by embedding them in terrazzo of pure, soft gold. It completely eliminates the need to create frames or bezels to clasp each gemstone. This art work is famous all over India, especially Rajasthan.

Stones of any shape or size can be used in any setting while Kundan work. The gold jewellery unit is prepared to hold a gemstone is generally of hollow construction, with individual parts soldered together. The process is complete and begins with high purity gold wire being beaten into thin, flat strips. These strips are then cut to the required length and led around the stone with a stylus. The high purity of this gold ensures that just the application of pressure can weld the gold in any shape around the stone, eliminating the need for healing.

As far as the Kundan surrounding the stone is concerned, it is either left plain or designs are created on it to heighten the play of light on the stone. Sometimes, the reverse side is ornamented with enamel work or minakari. Kundan is one of the most demanded styles of jewellery found in India, be it for bridal use or any other occasion.
