Kumar Gaurav was born on July 11, 1960 to the celebrated actor Rajendra Kumar. Kumar Gaurav`s father Rajendra Kumar was a very popular actor in the 1960s and 1970s. He studied at the Bishop Cotton School in Simla. He married Namrata Dutt, daughter of legendary actors Sunil Dutt, Nargis, and sister of actor Sanjay Dutt. Kumar Gaurav has two daughters Siya and Saachi Kumar.

Career of Kumar Gaurav
Kumar Gaurav made his film debut with the film Love Story (1981). This film hit the box office for a long period of time; not only for its innovative story, but also its music and the debutants. `Love Story` was produced by Kumar Gaurav`s father Rajendra Kumar and directed by Rahul Rawail. His next film was `Teri Kasam` with actress Poonam Dhillon. This 1982 release received mild success. His later films proved to be disappointing at the box office.

Kumar Gaurav received positive reviews for his performance in Mahesh Bhatt`s film `Janam` (1985). In the following year he came up with his second box office hit with `Naam` (1986), another Mahesh Bhatt film. This film too was produced by his father and also starred his brother-in-law Sanjay Dutt in the protagonist role. Despite the success of `Naam`, Gaurav`s career could not reach to higher limits because all of his subsequent films eventually failed to do well at the box office.

Rajendra Kumar tried to revive his son`s career once again with the 1993 film `Phool.` Rajendra Kumar himself and Kumar Gaurav`s father-in-law Sunil Dutt appeared in this film as supporting actors, but that did not bring him any luck either. Finally, he took a long break from his acting career in the early 1990s and returned to films in 2000 with a supporting role in the late actor Mazhar Khan`s `Gang` (2000).

Kumar Gaurav again came into prominence when he played one of the six protagonists in the crime thriller `Kaante` in 2002. This film was directed by Sanjay Gupta and a remake of the Hollywood hit Reservoir Dogs (2002). `Kaante` received a moderate success at the Bollywood box office. Again in 2004 he appeared in his first American film `Guiana 1838` (2004). This was the first film by Kumar Gaurav, which was won an award. Directed by Rohit Jagessar, Guiana grossed the highest screen average at North American box office on opening weekend. This film is on the all time highest screen average charts and on the Top 25 films list. Guiana, released in 1838 narrates the story of Indians, who arrived on the British colony of British Guiana as Indentured servants amidst the abolition of slavery during the nineteenth century.
