Kulasekara Varman

Kulasekara Varman was a Tamil Hindu saint king who is believed to be the King of Kongu nadu. Initially his empire included Kudamalainadu. He was responsible in reuniting the present state of Kerala into a single unit and ruled from the capital city of Mahodayapuram (present Kodungallur). His empire included the present state of Kerala, Nilgiri including Gudalur and the Salem-Coimbatore region. During this period Udagai became the second capital of the Kulasekara dynasty with a member of the Kulasekara family appointed to rule over the region.

He is one of the 12 Alvar saints of South India who believed in Vaishnavism.

Works of Kulasekara Varman
He composed the Perumal thirumozhi, one of the most celebrated devotional works of the Tamil Bhakti cult. He is also considered the author of the devotional Tamil lyric in Sanskrit, the Mukundamala. He has composed devotional poems that are dedicated to the Avatars of Vishnu. It is considered that Kulasekhara Alwar married a daughter of a Pandya Kings. He was also supported by the tamil clans Villavar, Malayar, Vanavar and Pazhuvettaraiyar.

It is presumed that he renounced the crown to become a sanyasi and lived in Srirangam to serve the deity of Ranganatha. He is revered as the 9th of the alvars who composed Bhakti songs. He was a great devotee of Lord Rama.
