The Puranas affirms that Koutsya is a mythological sage. He is the disciple of Maharishi Varatanta. Koutsya rewarded his tutor as a `Gurudakshina` with fourteen crores of rupees for the fourteen branches of study completed under him. The money given was collected from Raghu.
