Kokarnag is one of the unique tourist spots of Jammu and Kashmir which is situated at a height of 2010 m. This place is mainly known for the existing fresh water stream which has some curative effect. It is known to cures the diseases and sickness of all types. Due to this reason the diseased people are brought here and are cured by using this water.
Kokarnag derives its name from two words. Kokar means cock or fowl, nag means serpent which signifies the flow of the river in the serpentine form. Kokarnag is a collection of many small streams which looks like a claw of a Koker or cock that flows like a serpent from different regions of Kashmir valley. Kokarnag includes 300 such small streams which is further divided into 129 streams for garden irrigation and 171 for forest irrigation. Surrounded with sprawling gardens Kokarnag bubbles up at seven places and in every place the water has reflected some medicinal values that cure all kinds of diseases. There are only two such streams in Kashmir which is expected to have medicinal values. While one is Kokarnag, the other one is Verinag which is situated on the course of Jhelum.
Along with this Kokarnag is also known for the number of waterfalls which appear as river begins to flow. It is surrounded with a numerous variety of flowers and shrubs. The waterfalls flow through the hills of the region which gets which gets divided into number of canals that get diverted to the gardens as well as other parts of Kashmir Valley. It attracts a large number of tourists who visit the area every year due to its scenic beauty and legendary background. The place is well connected with Verinag which is only 3 kms from kokarnag, Duksum and Achchabi. These are other popular sights of tourism located in Kashmir valley.
Thus Kokarnag is one of the biggest fresh water streams that add to the scenic beauty of Kashmir. While lakes and gardens are some of the most prominent features of Kashmir valley, the streams like Kokarnag and Verinag are also equally attractive.
