Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is a well-known bird sanctuary which is renowned for being a safe refuge for innumerable birds and is located in Jamnagar District of Gujarat. It is enriched with nearly 300 species of migratory birds and is based at a distance of 12 kms away from Jamnagar. On 6th November, 1982, the sanctuary was proclaimed a sanctuary and is the largest bird sanctuary in entire portion of Gujarat. Travellers would discover that Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is an exclusive bird sanctuary as it is well-equipped with freshwater marshlands, fresh-water Lakes, salt marshlands.
The area occupied by the sanctuary measures nearly about 6.05 square kilometres. A special kind of ecosystem is present inside the grounds of this bird sanctuary which is existent at the watershed of Kalindri and Ruparel River. Since the sanctuary is present close to Narara Island, it also possesses a coral reef enriched with rich biodiversity.
Fauna of Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary
Khijadia Bird Sanctuary is home to shore birds and sea birds like Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Black Necked Stork, Brahminy Kite, Great Crested Grebe, Black Ibis, Shikra, Great Thick-Knee, Little Tern, Common Crane, Grey Francolin, Common Teal, Imperial Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Shoveller, Eurasian Wigeon, Garganey, Asian Open Bill-Stork, Dalmatian Stork, Common Greenshank, Black-Winged Kite, Demoiselle, Darter, Pale Harrier, Comb Duck, Northern Pintail, Black-Tailed Godwit, Cormorant and much more. Official reports have claimed that there exist about 257 to 300 kinds of migratory birds who pay visit to this bird sanctuary. Salim Ali, who was a famous ornithologist have been capable of catching sight of about 104 species of birds in a single day when he arrived here in the year 1984. Besides the great number of birds lurking throughout this sanctuary, one would also come across animals like Indian Hare, Bluebull, Jungle Cat, Wolf, Mongoose and plenty of snakes here. Various types of ducks build their nests in the Khijadia Bird Sanctuary which are not observed in any other portions of the country.
