The foot of the Katepurna Sanctuary is set on the lands of the Akola district in the Vidharba region of Maharashtra. The catchments of the Katepurna reservoir hold the Katepurna Sanctuary. This reservoir is located just near to the sanctuary.

Katepurna Sanctuary is quite popular for the wild carnivorous animals existing here. This is the house of such animals which are enlisted as endangered species. Katepurna Sanctuary is quite famous for two of its royal residents. One is the four horned antelope and the barking deer. These are found mostly in the vicinity of the Katepurna reservoir. Katepurna reservoir in Katepurna Sanctuary adds the beauty. Other wild creatures that raise the pride of the sanctuary are Leopard, Wolf, Hyenas, Black Buck, Wild Boar, Nilgai, Hare, Monkey, Jungle Cat, etc. Numerous species of birds are also located. These include common grassland and water birds, which often show sights in the Katepurna reservoir.

The natural vegetation is of semi-arid type. Some aquatic foliage is seen due to the presence of the reservoir. There are southern tropical dry deciduous trees abundant in this region. The tree species found most commonly are Tendu Tree, Bahada Tree, Khair Tree, Moha Tree, Dhawada Tree, Salai Tree, Teude Tree, Aola Tree, and many others.
