Karera Wildlife Sanctuary

Karera Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area of Great Indian Bustards. This wildlife sanctuary has a natural lake which adds the natural beauty.

Karera Wildlife Sanctuary, Shivpuri district, Madhya PradeshKarera Wildlife Sanctuary, a wildlife sanctuary, is located in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. Karera Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1981 with an aim to protect the birds of this region especially the Great Indian Bustard.

Karera Wildlife Sanctuary was enlisted as wildlife sanctuary by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in accordance with the provisions of the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. Karera Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 202 square kilometers, of which as much as 146 square kilometers is privately owned land.

The National Board for Wildlife and the Government of Madhya Pradesh declared this place as protected area. Karera Wildlife Sanctuary contains mixed deciduous forests and acacia is the principal species. It also has riverine and swamp vegetation within its borders. The Great Indian bustard, locally known as son chidiya or the golden bird and the blackbuck are the two significant species at the park.

The Dihaliya lake is one of the major attraction of this place hosts as an abode of the migratory birds Out of these Great Indian Bustard and other migratory birds there are at least 245 migrant species of birds including pintails, terns, spoonbills and teals have been recorded at Karera Wildlife Sanctuary.
